What is Google Fiber? Google is planning to launch an experiment that they hope will make Internet access better and faster for everyone. They plan to test ultra-high speed broadband networks in one or more trial locations across the country. We want New Haven to be one of these locations because Google's networks will deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today, over 1 gigabit per second, fiber-to-the-home connections and they'll offer service at a competitive price to at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people. The city of New Haven submitted a Request for information (RFI) March 26, 2010. Google will use this information to determine where to build their network.
New Haven is very interested in the opportunity to provide as many Internet
options to residents and businesses as possible. Over 1200 businesses, research institutions, nonprofits, community organizations and residents partnered with the city on the RFI application. Over 1100 cities applied for the chance to be picked as the test city. Google has said they will make the next round of cuts by late May or early June. Until then New Haven needs to do everything it can to get Google's attention! Why is Google Fiber good for New Haven? How fast is it anyway? We are Google Haven - You, me, that guy over there, ALL of us! Google Haven started with the opening of a SeeClickFix case and the Facebook Group in February 2010 and grew into a community wide campaign to show how much we want New Haven to be Google Haven.
