What is Google Fiber?
Google is planning to launch an experiment that they hope will make Internet access better and faster for everyone. They plan to test ultra-high speed broadband networks in one or more trial locations across the country. We want New Haven to be one of these locations because Google's networks will deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today, over 1 gigabit per second, fiber-to-the-home connections and they'll offer service at a competitive price to at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people. The city of New Haven submitted a Request for information (RFI) March 26, 2010.  Google will use this information to determine where to build their network.

New Haven is very interested in the opportunity to provide as many Internet options to residents and businesses as possible. Over 1200 businesses, research institutions, nonprofits, community organizations and residents partnered with the city on the RFI application.  Over 1100 cities applied for the chance to be picked as the test city. Google has said they will make the next round of cuts by late May or early June.  Until then New Haven needs to do everything it can to get Google's attention!

Why is Google Fiber good for New Haven?
Google Fiber brings competition to the New Haven market. Competition drives better quality and lower prices, and therefore more access for more New Haveners. Because New Haven will be one of few places on earth with 100x faster internet, we can also look forward to a virtuous cycle of innovation in terms of what's possible in our daily life (e.g., health care, education, entertainment, etc.) and what's possible for our industries and careers, the kind of talent and investments we can attract here.

Why is New Haven good for Google Fiber?
New Haven boasts a diversity of people, sectors, resources, and needs - a rarity in the population size Google wants for its pilot. But precisely because we are small enough, we are also nimble. Able to unite and mobilize diverse groups behind a common purpose - fast. Our mix of diversity and agility gives Google both the showcase and testbed it needs to convince the open market that Google Fiber is a good choice vs. the competition

How fast is it anyway?
To give you an example, to download a feature length high-definition movie today takes about 30 to 60 minutes. With Google Fiber it would be fully downloaded in 15 SECONDS! Speeds at this level change everything. The possibilities are limitless!

What is GoogleHaven?
We are Google Haven - You, me, that guy over there, ALL of us! Google Haven started with the opening of a SeeClickFix case and the Facebook Group in February 2010 and grew into a community wide campaign to show how much we want New Haven to be Google Haven.
